Protective Styling

Have you ever wondered why someone who has been natural for less time than you has achieved considerably MORE hair growth than you? The difference is often protective styling. Protective styling is simply wearing your hair "up" in a style that doesn't expose the fragile ends of your hair, and doesn't require daily manipulation. This includes styles like braids, twists, weaves, wigs, and buns (with each style having its own pros and cons ofcourse).

This pic shows the protective style (a bun) I used to rock before I cut my hair. I'm rocking the hell out of those waves, huh? Can you believe this lady at my job asked me if I put all of those waves in my hair one by one with a curling iron? She was dead serious! LOL! Anyhoo, people also used to ask why I never wore my hair down. I tried to explain that if I didn't wear my hair up to protect it, I wouldn't have all that hair to begin with. Protective styling does take commitment. It can often be monotonous and quite frankly a pain in the tooshy. But no pain, no gain, Toots! Believe me, it can be the difference between waist length hair or still having a teeny weeny afro even 5 years after you're big chop-a-roo. Are you routinely wearing protective styles that promote growth?

Healthy Hair Growth Step 5: Moisture, Moisture, Moisture!

Alright LLL Natural Beauties! So you've just finished washing those kinky curls, giving them a good but gentle scrubbing. You've cleared all the tangles with your trusty wide-tooth comb. You've liberated yourself by burning your brushes and your bras and so... what's next, you ask? Ok, ok! Slow yo roll, sucka! I'm about to tell you! Here goes... Every time you use conditioner, you restore moisture to your hair. Well, in this next step you've got to "put it on lock". Lock it down, lock it down down! That's right, it's important to LOCK that moisture on in! You achieve this by taking your favorite hair oil and generously applying it to your kinky curls, while wet, from root to tip. It's that easy! Now once again, you're going to have to put in work because finding the right oil for your hair is a matter of trial and error. What works for your girl Nay Nay up the skreet may not work for you. Natural oils and butters are best. Moisture! Moisture! Moisture! is key to keeping the hair supple and promoting healthy hair growth. Your hair won't thrive without it!

Healthy Hair Growth Step 4: Burn Those Brushes!

So you made your way to your nearest drugstore or black hair and beauty shop to cop your favorite 'poo, conditioner, and wide-tooth comb. Congrats, you're ready for Step 4! The 4th step involves tossing, ditching, BURNING your brushes and any other harsh hair tools for that matter. This step is a controversial one. Many naturalheads seem to be split on whether or not we should be brushing our natural kinks. I just think brushes are way too harsh on our delicate, already fragile hair. In fact, I haven't owned a brush in 8 years! The mere thought of all that extra pulling, tugging, and snagging with a brush is like nails to a chalkboard... It makes me cringe!

Although lately I've been hearing that some natural beauties swear by the "Denman Brush" for curl formation. Because I currently wear my hair in a protective style (and curl formation isn't currently what I'm trying to achieve), the Denman isn't really necessary for me. For some, it may be an option though. Who knows? Maybe one day soon I'll give the old Denman a go and then I'll let you know if it gets the "thumbs up" or not. I guess I can't really knock it till I try it, right? For now though, I'm sticking to my guns (especially when it comes to regular bristled brushes). When used correctly, a wide-tooth comb should be more than enough to get the job done!

But I'm back to serve you up with a nice, tall, juicylicious glass of your favorite hair care tips and info. Now, people are always asking me how to achieve long, strong, and healthy natural hair. Although the overall concept of natural, healthy hair is quite simple, there is still alot of information and many things to be considered. It can be overwhelming and sometimes you just don't know where to start. So I thought it might be nice to change things up a taste. • As you rinse, let the suds clean the length of the hair
  • ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS follow with conditioner
  • Again, you gotta put in more work... finding "the one" is trial and error

Step 3: Using a Wide-Tooth Comb.
